Why Should I Care?

I saw the child’s father today
He smiled and then went in
We share a wall, two flats
I heard a shout, a crash
I turned up the tv
Why should I care?

The child came past me today
Tried to hurry
I saw the bruise
Accident maybe?
I went inside
Read the newspaper
Why should I care?

Heard more than usual today
Several bangs and a scream
Something smashed
Heard their door open
Then it slammed shut
I carried on eating
Why should I care?

More swearing today
Child was outside later
More bruises, tears
Looked at me
I looked away
Continued walking
Why should I care?

Came home early today
Saw the rope dangling
Saw the child swinging
Dead child
Saw the note
Read it, it said
‘why does no one care?’

Funeral today
I brought flowers
There were tears
Most were mine
I should have cared

Well this poem stems from the 'head in the sand' syndrome I read and hear about day in and day out.  It seems that If it doesnt affect you then it isnt worth bothering about.  Well here is the fact, you should be bothered.  Dont wait until you regret not getting involved.  I am not saying go out there and meddle in everything.  If its wrong and you know its wrong, act now, while you can.
